The Neighborhood College Ministry believes in asking the hard questions. The Ask Me Anything series allows people to anonymously submit faith questions—no question is off-limits. At the end of the 2021-2022 year, the group decided to continue the Ask Me Anything series into the next school year. Below is a list of previously covered topics, so that you can learn more about what interests you, and get an idea of what topics are covered during crew!

Previously Covered Topics

Week 1: The Jesus Movement

  • What role does the church play in faith? My church has been fortunate enough to surround me with a great environment, but it can be a dangerous place in a way. Do we need to change the church culture?

  • Why do people assume God was white?

  • If you must accept the Christian God to go to heaven then heaven itself would be predominantly white. Does this say something about Christianity (perhaps some bias?)

Week 2: Religion of the State (*Same as Week 1)

  • What role does the church play in faith? My church has been fortunate enough to surround me with a great environment, but it can be a dangerous place in a way. Do we need to change the church culture?

  • Why do people assume God was white?

  • If you must accept the Christian God to go to heaven then heaven itself would be predominantly white. Does this say something about Christianity (perhaps some bias?)

Week 3: The Danger of Black and White Thinking

  • When does faith inhibit open-mindedness?

  • Why do we as a faith preach inclusion but practice the opposite quite often?

Week 4: What to Know Before Reading the Bible

  • What should I know before beginning to read the Bible?

Week 5: How to Read the Bible

  • What should I look for as I read the Bible?

  • How can I use the Bible responsibly to develop stances on controversial issues?

Week 6: The Afterlife: Heaven

  • What are the varying perspectives on heaven and hell? Are we truly deemed to one place for eternity?

  • What about people who aren't Christian but have never heard of Christianity?

  • I have so many questions about heaven and hell but don’t know where to start.

Week 7: The Afterlife: Hell (*Same questions as Week 6)

  • What are the varying perspectives on heaven and hell? Are we truly deemed to one place for eternity?

  • What about people who aren't Christian but have never heard of Christianity?

  • I have so many questions about heaven and hell but don’t know where to start.

Week 8: Demons

  • Are demons still within the spiritual realm?

Week 9: The Devil

  • Is the devil a theoretical concept of human temptation to stray from God rather than a spiritual being?

Week 10: Angels

  • Umm…angels??

  • Where do angels come from?

  • Do people become angels?

  • What is the purpose of angels if no longer to be God’s messengers?

Week 11: Creation Myths

  • If Methodists don’t concern themselves with how the world was made, how active do Methodists believe God was in the creation of earth?

  • Christianity has a story that dates back to the creation of the universe, but it’s far from unique in that regard. Countless other religions have creation stories as well. Why do people use this claim to argue for Christianity?

Week 12: How Would Life on Other Planets Impact Our Beliefs?

  • There’s likely another life form somewhere given the size of the universe, but there’s no guarantee that it’s as advanced as humans. If God created the entire universe, do we as Christians believe that there is more than one God possibly or that we’re just special? Why did Jesus pick earth?

Week 13: Aliens & Mary's Pregnancy

  • Do you think that aliens could have played a part in Mary’s pregnancy and Jesus?

Week 14: Deconstruction 101

  • How I do I start deconstruction? Within deconstruction, how do I tell if I’m “cherry picking” what to believe or actually getting rid of misconceptions?

  • Is it possible to truly believe in something that can’t be proven?

  • How on earth can anyone be comfortable in their faith? How can anyone confidently believe they have it right?

Week 15: Disorder & Reorder (*Same questions as Week 14)

  • How I do I start deconstruction? Within deconstruction, how do I tell if I’m “cherry picking” what to believe or actually getting rid of misconceptions?

  • Is it possible to truly believe in something that can’t be proven?

  • How on earth can anyone be comfortable in their faith? How can anyone confidently believe they have it right?

Week 16: Ash Wednesday

Week 17: Tools for Difficult Faith Conversations w/ Becca Griffin

  • How do you converse with someone who forgoes logic when talking about religion?

Week 18: Non-traditional Spiritual Practice

  • How can I worship God in ways that aren't the traditional church service?

  • Is Christianity all or nothing? Sometimes I feel like a “half Christian” because I think that Jesus is Love and I feel the Spirit but I also have New Age beliefs in meditation, crystals, etc. I think that many religions have elements of the truth, and it’s hard for me to say that I’m strictly one thing

Week 19: What Is A “Calling”?

  • How can I decipher what God is telling me/calling me to do?

  • Can a person be happy doing something that God didn’t “call” them to do? Who is anyone to claim that someone’s happiness isn’t real?

Week 20: What is Sin?

  • What is the Methodist view of salvation? Is more than a personal relationship with God needed for salvation (i.e., good deeds)?

  • I’ve heard that we are all sinners and broken but can only be made whole through Jesus’ love and God’s love. But if God is love, then how are we sinners if we are made in His image?

  • Can Christianity and free will coexist? If I choose to sin, then God isn’t responsible, but if I do something great then it’s by the glory of God. God obviously allowed the situation to occur, but God cannot get all the credit for everything given sin, right? God taking credit for all the good things but none of the bad seems like a cop-out.

  • Is Jesus really the only way? What about other religions?

  • What is the purpose of faith? Why does God want everyone to believe? (Why did we propagate evangelism so much that it became harmful?)

Week 21: What is Salvation? (*Same questions as Week 20)

  • What is the Methodist view of salvation? Is more than a personal relationship with God needed for salvation (i.e. good deeds)?

  • I’ve heard that we are all sinners and broken but can only be made whole through Jesus’ love and God’s love. But if God is love, then how are we sinners if we are made in His image?

  • Can Christianity and free will coexist? If I choose to sin, then God isn’t responsible, but if I do something great then it’s by the glory of God. • Is Jesus really the only way? What about other religions?

  • What is the purpose of faith? Why does God want everyone to believe? (Why did we propagate evangelism so much that it became harmful?)

Week 22: Queer Theology

  • Am I allowed to be queer? My old church told me that you could be gay, but couldn’t “act on it” or be in a relationship.

Week 23: Purity Culture

  • Christianity and purity culture. Let’s deconstruct abstinence and the perspective of sex in the Christian culture please, I was walking around with perpetual guilt from Young Life Purity culture for a hot second.
